Originally from the Tri-Cities region of Erwin, Tennessee, Dr. John Salyer, was mentored by his high school debate team judge, who was also his family physician that inspired him to become a doctor. Dr. Salyer graduated college with high honors in physics from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his medical degree from University of Tennessee at Memphis and completed a Family Practice internship and residency program at University of Alabama and Huntsville Hospital. Dr. Salyer achieved Board Certification by the American Academy of Family Practice in 1979.

Dr. Salyer first came to Dickson in 1977, as a second year resident at University of Alabama, to work in the Emergency Department at Goodlark Hospital and Sunday Clinic at Jackson Clinic. As he neared the end of his residency program, he was offered a full-time position with the clinic and began his medical practice at Jackson Clinic in September 1979.  He worked full-time at the Jackson Clinic in Fairview for 17 years, from 1983 to 2000, before moving his practice back to Dickson. During his tenure with Jackson Clinic, subsequently named Dickson Medical Associates, Dr. Salyer has served as a shareholder, officer and member of the Board of Directors since 1991. He is also a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

As a family practitioner, Dr. Salyer’s practice not only includes diagnosing and treating illness, he provides preventive care, including routine checkups, health-risk assessments, immunization and screening tests, and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He has worked for many years with local business and industry providing pre-employment, worker’s compensation exams, and services as a certified medical review officer.  NHC Healthcare has recognized Dr. Salyer as their Medical Director since 1997.

Dr. Salyer is married to Sheron Jones Salyer. Sheron, a Doctor of Science Nursing (“DSN”), is a Research Compliance Officer at Veteran’s Administration in Nashville.  They have one daughter, Sarah Beth, and son, Norman Wright.  Sarah Beth is attending the accelerated B.S. Nursing program at Union University with aspirations of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Norman, a master’s graduate of Clemson University, is the Director of Neighbor Services, Adams County, Colorado.  Grandpa and Nanna are doting when it comes to their beautiful granddaughter, Natalie, age 3.

If University of Tennessee is playing Vanderbilt in any sport, you can be assured the “blood runs orange” UT fan will be at the game or cheering his team on in front of the TV.  Dr. Salyer also enjoys reading and needle work during his quiet time.
